The Darden College of Education & Professional Studies Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Diversity Statement
The Darden College of Education & Professional Studies is dedicated to engaging in intentional and ongoing efforts to create a culturally sustaining climate that is committed to equity, inclusivity, and diversity. We are devoted to fostering a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students in uncovering and addressing systemic barriers, promoting an inclusive and equitable community, and supporting social justice in our programs and in the professional disciplines for which we prepare our students. Such dedication includes aligning our efforts with the university's strategic plan, evaluating our progress and adjusting our efforts to meet our evolving goals.
The Darden College of Education & Professional Studies strives to build a culture of inclusivity which helps our faculty and students thrive in scholarship, knowledge generation and community engagement. We believe these efforts will assist our university in meeting the needs of a rapidly changing world and our success depends upon the robust exchange of ideas across cultures.
Diversity Center
Together, The Alliance for Equity-Based Research and Practice (AERP) and the Academic Affairs Office of Faculty Diversity & Retention make up the College's Diversity Center. This unique combination of foci offers a means to leverage scholarly innovations that better support the mission of equity and social justice as well as the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty. We recognize that the culture of scholarship, research, and faculty/community collaboration are central to creating an inclusive, safe and trusting environment for scholars with varying backgrounds to prosper, thrive and contribute to the growth and sustainability of a just and equitable world.
The Academic Affairs Office of Faculty Diversity & Retention
Our goal is to leverage our resources, develop new programs that foster a more inclusive environment and work hand in hand with colleagues around campus to garner insight on our progress toward inclusive excellence. We seek foster and grown an inclusive academic community that can better attract and retain a diverse faculty body.
The Alliance for Equity-Based Research and Practice (AERP)
This is intended to function as a collaborative network of scholars, practitioners, and community members that draw from critical emancipation theories and research methods with the goal of identifying and overcoming the undergirding barriers to equity and social justice. Through the participation of the various communities of practice represented in the Darden College of Education we seek to overcome the traditional power dynamics that can promote a narrowing of what forms of knowledge and which knowledge claimants are deemed credible. This is critical to equity and social justice because knowledge has material, economic, social, political, civic and symbolic value; and the perceived credibility of a given knower shapes their access to and use of these knowledge resources.
